Avatar is a science fiction film directed by James Cameron, released in 2009. Anticipated to be a complete failure at the box office by film critics, the film released and topped ticket sales, hardly dipping in its revenue from the second to its third week. It seemed as if this film, set in the 22nd century had struck a chord with the audience and that 3D cinema had finally come of age with the release of Avatar.

The release of the Avatar DVD in the United States on 22nd of April, 2010 and in the United Kingdom on 26th of April broke all records and gathered millions and millions of dollars in revenue. The Avatar DVD was released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in DVD as well as Blu-Ray formats. The release of the Avatar DVD in the US was not scheduled for a Tuesday as goes the convention but was made to correspond with Earth Day. James Cameron commented that the April Avatar DVD would be a “bare bones” version – with merely the theatrical film and optimal sound available for viewing in both Avatar DVD as well as Blu-Ray formats. Fox Entertainment told the press that it was planning another release of the Avatar DVD in November 2010, which would be “value-added” and would have deleted scenes, documentaries and direction cuts. Neither the April version of the Avatar DVD nor its November version are 3D, as Cameron felt that 3D home entertainment was still not equipped to deal with a 3D version of the Avatar DVD.
On the first day of the release of the Avatar DVD, its combined sales with Blu-Ray discs were over four million units. In only four days of the Avatar DVD being released, it crossed the sales of The Dark Knight, which was previously the best-selling Blu-Ray release in the area. What followed was the November release of the Avatar DVD. The three-disc collector’s edition on DVD and Blu-Ray which saw its release on 16th of November, 2010 consisted of the original theatrical film, the special edition, and a collector’s cut too. The collector’s cut on the Avatar DVD has six extra minutes of footage, thus making the Avatar DVD a real treat for any movie lover.
What most critics and film analysts kept asking was whether Avatar was big enough to make people buy an Avatar DVD twice – once in April and once in November, 2010. While Cameron is said to have plans of releasing the Avatar DVD in 3D some time during 2011 or 2012, the question whether people will invest in a third Avatar DVD remains potent. The Avatar DVD – whether one has the April or November version is a real treat for anybody who liked Avatar as a film. The Avatar DVD makes sure that in this new age of technology, people get to enjoy the film as many times as they like. The Avatar DVD combines the best elements of any regular movie and packs the whole experience into one box. And it would only be a guess as to what level the 3D version of the Avatar DVD would take home media to.
